Humans respond to their environment through their senses. In this course students learn that plants and other animals do too. Plants respond to light, touch, water and gravity. Animals also respond through their senses and some have additional senses such as echolocation and infrared sensing. Physical and behavioral adaptations allow animals and animals to survive. Students see and hear examples of both types of adaptations. Students use their knowledge of adaptations and use the scientific method to see the effects of oil on a feather. Indigenous knowledge in the form of a story highlights the role of the storyteller in the local Indigenous culture.

Students see and discuss examples of different biomes and their characteristics. Biomes can be terrestrial or aquatic. There are 6 major biomes in BC and students do a whole class activity to learn about the characteristics of each. The students learn how Indigenous communities lived with the land, not just on it.
