The Grade 7 curriculum focuses on how plants and animals evolve over time.
Scientists have studied the changes in feathers throughout history and observed how
they have evolved into what they are today. Traits are characteristics of organisms
and natural selection occurs when specific traits allow an organism a better chance at
survival. Organisms can have a variety of traits that can change due to mutation or
artificial selection. Speciation (new species) can occur when an organism in a group
develops its own unique traits.
Charles Darwin observed similarities and differences in organisms and concluded that
changes could occur over time, or evolve. Organisms that adapt to their environment
have a much better chance of survival.
Biodiversity is important in any environment and many factors will affect it. BC is rich
in biodiversity and includes many rare and endangered species. Indigenous Peoples
have observed changes in biodiversity due to climate change and other factors.
